She scavenges all the love and humanity that hasn’t been turned to tinder, pours them out — I’m sorry, Sam — inadequate, always so inadequate, and finally lets the fire take her.

What a great episode. Tasted absolutely cold and awful going down but once I sat with it for a while, it started to warm up.
Deliverance … all of them are struggling with different kinds of absence. They are all facing the stark reality of how the presence or lack of presence of important people in their lives is shaping them - willingly or unwillingly. They wonder aloud whether theirs is an ultimately worthwhile sacrifice or not. Whether it’s going to serve a higher purpose in the end or not. Whether they will be saved, too, and whether or not that should matter. How much control they really have over it… and how the answer is yes, the decision is ultimately theirs, no matter how monstrous or tiny the detail that makes the decision hard to live with later, how much easier it would be to just blame someone else, rather than live with the knowledge that the choice was made alone, simply a hard one to make when nothing is ever really, truly, fully known ahead of time (…or is it).
